ASEE K12 Division Newsletter
October 15, 2014

Dear ASEE K12 and Precollege Engineering Division Members,

It’s that time to be wrapping up your abstracts for the 2015 Annual Conference in Seattle! The proposal system is now open for your abstracts.  Be sure to follow the guidelines in the call for proposals and submit no later than October 19.  That’s this Sunday!!

We are still in need of additional reviewers RIGHT NOW, so please consider volunteering yourself or perhaps encouraging a graduate student to participate.  You don’t need to be planning to attend the annual conference in order to help with this important task.  Contact Program Chair, Merredith Portsmore, at mportsmo@tufts.edu if you are willing to help.

Two important surveys are taking place right now sponsored by the NAE that I hope you will participate in and encourage your colleagues to participate in.
·        The first, item 1 below, is regarding the interests, needs, and expectations of potential users of the new PreK-12 engineering education site: NAE PreK12 Engineering Education Survey <https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/NAEPreK12EESurvey> .  Reponses are due by October 20
·        The second, item 2 below, is related to questions regarding the connections between engineering education, the engineering workforce, and the employment of engineering talent throughout the U.S. economy.   Responses are due October 17.
Several jobs that may appeal to our division membership are open at both Purdue University, item 3 below, and The College of New Jersey, item 4 below.

Finally, I would like to draw your attention to a free massive open online course (MOOC) on learning in the STEM disciplines: Learning How to Learn: Powerful Mental Tools to Help You Master Tough Subjects <https://www.coursera.org/course/learning> .  This MOOC is one of Coursera’s most popular offerings—with almost 200,000 students in the first session, and the second session, which is just beginning, is currently #1 of all 253 MOOCs being offered worldwide in the month of October.  ASEE’s executive director, Dr. Fortenberry was featured in the book that accompanies the MOOC A Mind for Numbers <http://www.amazon.com/Mind-Numbers-Science-Flunked-Algebra/dp/039916524X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1411749287&sr=8-1&keywords=a+mind+for+numbers> : How to Excel at Math and Science (Even If You Flunk Algebra), (Penguin, 2014), which is on the list of New York Times best-selling science books.  Here also is Dr. Barb Oakley’s related op-ed <http://online.wsj.com/articles/barbara-oakley-repetitive-work-in-math-thats-good-1411426037>  in the Wall Street Journal about learning in the STEM disciplines, which has brought a good deal of attention to how engineering can contribute to the national perspective on learning. Learning language and learning math shares much in common—and we can profitably use this information to help steer women towards STEM, as she discusses in this article <http://nautil.us/issue/17/big-bangs/how-i-rewired-my-brain-to-become-fluent-in-math-rd>  in the popular science magazine Nautilus.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly with information that should be shared with the division or if you have questions or concerns about division work.  It’s easiest to reach me by email at stacy.klein-gardner@vanderbilt.edu.

With best regards,
Stacy

In order to inform the early design and content development for this website, the NAE has contracted with David Heil & Associates, Inc. (DHA), an independent consulting firm, to conduct a national survey regarding the interests, needs, and expectations of potential users of the new site.

We are inviting members like you to provide input by completing this survey, which can be accessed via the link provided below. All of your responses will be confidential and accessible only to DHA and your participation in the survey is voluntary. The survey should take approximately 15 minutes to complete.

This survey will be open for responses through October 20, 2014.

All respondents who complete the survey will be eligible to win one of two $150 Amazon gift certificates.

Dear Colleague,
The National Academy of Engineering is seeking input from stakeholders on questions regarding the connections between engineering education, the engineering workforce, and the employment of engineering talent throughout the U.S. economy. This feedback will help shape topics addressed at a public workshop that the NAE Committee on Understanding the Engineering Education-Workforce Continuum will convene on November 19-20, 2014 in Washington, DC. The committee is particularly interested in input from the following stakeholders:
· professional society leadership
· faculty
· engineers working in industry
· employers and managers of engineers
· students
· administrators
· career counselors
· government representatives
· foundation or federal funding representatives
If you are a member of one of these stakeholder groups, we hope you will complete the questionnaire
<http://fs4.formsite.com/lynetteosborne/form14/index.html?1412644315735> by October 17, 2014 – it should take about 10-15 minutes. We would also appreciate your help sharing the questionnaire with others from the target groups who might be interested.
The blinded results of this questionnaire will be presented at a public workshop in late November. If you are interested in attending, please fill out this form
<http://fs4.formsite.com/lynetteosborne/form15/index.html?1412644420529> to be considered for a spot at the workshop.
If you have questions about the survey or are having problems accessing it, please email naeworkforce@gmail.com
