ASEE K12 Division Newsletter
November 24, 2014
Dear ASEE K12 and Precollege Engineering Division Members,
Happy Thanksgiving! I write a couple days early to be sure this reaches your inbox before you turn off work for a few days and celebrate Thanksgiving. I am thankful for all of you! This is a lengthy letter, which is always exciting, so be sure to scan all the way through for the highlight topics in red.
The call for proposals has been announced and presentation proposals may now be submitted for the 12th Engineering in K-12 Classrooms – ASEE Annual Teachers Workshop!! This daylong program for teachers and engineering educators from across the country will provide an energizing, interactive overview of successful engineering education instruction for the K-12 classroom. Attendees will learn engaging hands-on lessons and interactive activities to share with students, receive takeaway materials ready for use in the classroom, and have opportunities to network with other engineering educators. To submit a proposal, download the complete the K-12 Workshop Proposal Form <http://k-12meetingcoordinator.cmail2.com/t/y-l-iidtiiy-jtykhynhh-w/> and submit your proposal through the ASEE Paper Management system as shown in the K12 Workshop Presenter’s Kit. <http://k-12meetingcoordinator.cmail2.com/t/y-l-iidtiiy-jtykhynhh-yd/> Proposals are due January 23, 2015. Individual workshops should:
· prominently feature hands-on classroom activities,
· provide take-home or classroom-ready materials, in addition to written materials,
· engage participants in interactive exercises,
· explicitly feature strategies, activities and/or curricula.
All workshops must be linked to national standards (e.g., the ITEEA Technological Literacy Standards <http://k-12meetingcoordinator.cmail2.com/t/y-l-iidtiiy-jtykhynhh-yh/> , the Next Generation Science Standards <http://k-12meetingcoordinator.cmail2.com/t/y-l-iidtiiy-jtykhynhh-yk/> , the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics <http://k-12meetingcoordinator.cmail2.com/t/y-l-iidtiiy-jtykhynhh-yu/> ).
K-12 teachers and outreach faculty and staff – I hope that we will find many of you at the NSTA Long Beach Regional Conference next month! On Friday, December 5, ASEE will be hosting its annual Engineering Day as a part of NSTA. We’ve got six sessions over the course of the day. Please stop by and encourage your colleagues to attend. Thanks in advance to division members David Heil, Lily Gossage, Mary Phelps, and Lupe Muñoz-Alvarado who are helping with presentations.
I am proud to announce that the K12 Division is the recipient of a Professional Interest Council (PIC) Chairs Special Project Funds grant of $300. The division will be matching these funds to purchase a division banner and tablecloth to use at division activities such as the NSTA Regional presentations. Thanks, PIC Chairs!
I am also delighted to announce that the K12 Division will have two Sunday workshops at ASEE’s annual conference this year! “SUNDAY WORKSHOP: TeachEngineering Digital Library – Hundreds of Free, Searchable, NGSS-aligned Hands-on Engineering Lessons for K-12″ is being offered 9am – 12noon. This workshop will be a terrific offering for all of our membership as well as the local teachers who participate in our Saturday workshop. “SUNDAY WORKSHOP: How Does Your Professional Development Measure Up? Applying the New Standards for Professional Development for K-12 Teachers of Engineering” is being offered 1-4pm. This workshop will also suit our K12 classroom teachers and administrators as well as those of us who offer professional development for K12 teachers of engineering.
Are you a primary school teacher or outreacher who works with grades K-2? If so, please contact me directly with information about effective engineering programs for this age beyond Engineering is Elementary. I am collecting information for the Society of Elementary Presidential Awardees.
Each summer the Center for STEM Education for Girls (http://stemefg.org <http://stemefg.org> ) hosts the STEM Think Tank and Conference. The 4th Annual Think Tank and Conference will be held July 8-10, 2015, at the Harpeth Hall School in Nashville, TN (http://stemefg.org/index.php/think-tank-and-conference/). It brings together national leaders in K12 education for girls and young women (independent, public, charter, and parochial), university K12 outreach coordinators and researchers, STEM university faculty, girls’ informal educators, and members of industry. Please plan to attend if you teach or work with girls and young women in a STEM field. The conference begins midday on Wednesday (July 8) and runs through 5pm on Thursday (July 9). On Friday (July 10) we hold optional post-conference workshops. This year, those workshops can be either 3- or 6-hour workshops and are intended to be very deep dives into a particular topic. Please consider making your proposal to share your work in the classroom or outreach program during a 3- or 6-hour Friday workshop: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/STEMTTC2015WorkshopProposals. The call for full conference proposals (as opposed to just the Friday workshops) will be issued soon.
