It’s only two weeks away! The annual conference is right around the corner, and I’m excited to get to be together with all of you who are able to attend. Get Information about your P12 Program or Project Out at the P12 Booth in Salt Lake!
Are you passionate about telling people how you engage students in P12 Engineering? Are you interested in getting information about your P12 project or program out to the broader ASEE community at the P12 Booth in the Exhibit Hall in Salt Lake, or just committing some time to help staff the P12 Booth?
If you answered yes to any of these questions please consider volunteering some of your time at the P12 Committee booth at the ASEE conference in June.
What are we asking PCEE Division members to do? How can you help? You can volunteer in two different ways.
- Spend time being a booth greeter. When you do so, you have an opportunity to share your experiences, give away prizes, and brag about your programs! Click this link to sign up. Time slots are filling up fast – sign up today!!
- Bring information about a P12 program or activity that you are involved with and we will share it with visitors to the booth. Please use this template, print and bring 15-20 color copies to the P12 Booth in the Exhibit Hall for us to distribute.
- Why? To get the word out to ASEE members about what we are doing in the pre-college/P12 space and how we can do more in that space as an ASEE community.
- Who is organizing this? The booth is organized by the Board of Directors Committee on P-12 Engineering Education, with collaboration from the PCEE Division to staff the booth.

New ASEE Constituent Committee seeking support
A Proposal to Establish the Educational Proficiency Constituent Committee can be found at this link. This committee will explore how ASEE can take on a leadership role internationally in assessing, advancing, and certifying the proficiency of engineering educators.
The undersigned propose forming an ASEE Constituent Committee which will explore the needs, methods and potential of developing voluntary certification of engineering & computing educators. The goals of the Constituent Committee are to:
- Create a self-sustaining forum for individuals interested in understanding and enhancing instructional and curriculum quality in engineering, computing, and engineering technology.
- Review international certification of engineering, computing and technology education.
- Develop criteria for the recognition or partial recognition of assessed courses in educational proficiency and scholarship.
- Develop and evaluate models of education for educational proficiency and scholarship.
- Review, maintain and synthesize the ever growing body of educational research and its bearing on teaching and to make it available to the profession.
- Consider the possibility of recognizing different levels of proficiency and scholarship.

New Study Seeks Participants Who Have Submitted Manuscripts to the Journal of Engineering Education
Journal of STEM Outreach
Updates on a couple of new features of the J STEM Outreach.
- We are now hosted by Scholastic with a brand new look (same website – jstemoutreach.org).
- The host has strongly recommended that we go to a rolling submission and publication feature. So, there will be no set submission dates and deadlines. As an article moves through the system from review to final acceptance, that article will be published on the website and featured as the latest article. This will make for a much more dynamic journal, and one that will probably garner more traffic and thus a higher profile.

Special Issue “Computer Science and Engineering Education for Pre-collegiate Students and Teachers”
There are widespread areas to explore in both engineering education and computer science education. While computer science has roots in mathematics and is often seen as a branch of engineering, based on Johri and Olds’ Cambridge Handbook of Engineering Education Research (2014) and Kadijevich, Angeli, and Schulte’s Improving Computer Science Education (2013), exploration of computer science and engineering education offers a rich field of study.
This Special Issue “Computer Science and Engineering Education for Pre-Collegiate Students and Teachers” is a mechanism to advance and capture the current conversation about computer science and engineering education in pre-collegiate schools—worldwide—by using current research studies in the area. Quantitative, qualitative, mixed methods, and action research methodologies are welcome for this special issue. A clear problem and research questions, appropriate theoretical framework, literature review, methodology and methods, analysis, conclusions, and limitations are expected for all submitted articles.

NSBE Symposium– June 22-24
The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) is hosting a symposium for 100 Deans and Diversity Administrators of ABET-accredited engineering schools on June 22-24in Salt Lake City to share research and actionable institutional interventions, core strategies, and critical concepts for retaining underrepresented minorities in engineering bachelor’s degree programs. The symposium operationalizes the Deans’ Diversity Pledge.
The URM Engineering Student Success Symposium will be co-located with the 2018 meeting of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) in Salt Lake City, Utah, where ASEE’s Engineering Dean’s Council also holds its annual meeting. MEPs from NAMEPA will be leading many of the workshops.
With the main audience as Deans of Engineering schools, we also welcome diversity administrators who attend as proxies for their school deans.
The main resource we will be using is the NSBE Student Retention Toolkit. The toolkit was developed in partnership with ASEE to address the problem of the declining percentage of African American engineering graduates by providing strategies for helping U.S. colleges and universities change the equation for engineering diversity within their institutions.
The Toolkit is available on Amazon. We will also have printed copies for sale at the Symposium.
