Dear ASEE K12 and Precollege Engineering Division Members,
And now for our regular newsletter…. which not surprisingly starts with information about the call for proposals for the K12 workshop. Keep reading though…. there’s more beyond that!
Proposals for the 12th Engineering in K-12 Classrooms – ASEE Annual Teachers Workshop are due January 23! This daylong program for teachers and engineering educators from across the country will provide an energizing, interactive overview of successful engineering education instruction for the K-12 classroom. Attendees will learn engaging hands-on lessons and interactive activities to share with students, receive takeaway materials ready for use in the classroom, and have opportunities to network with other engineering educators. To submit a proposal, download the complete the K-12 Workshop Proposal Form <http://k-12meetingcoordinator.cmail2.com/t/y-l-iidtiiy-jtykhynhh-w/> and submit your proposal in pdf format through the ASEE Paper Management system as shown in the K12 Workshop Presenter’s Kit. <http://k-12meetingcoordinator.cmail2.com/t/y-l-iidtiiy-jtykhynhh-yd/> Proposals are due January 23, 2015. All workshops are 75 minutes in length.

Individual workshops should:
· prominently feature hands-on classroom activities,
· provide take-home or classroom-ready materials, in addition to written materials,
· engage participants in interactive exercises,
· explicitly feature strategies, activities and/or curricula.
All workshops must be linked to national standards (e.g., the ITEEA Technological Literacy Standards <http://k-12meetingcoordinator.cmail2.com/t/y-l-iidtiiy-jtykhynhh-yh/> , the Next Generation Science Standards <http://k-12meetingcoordinator.cmail2.com/t/y-l-iidtiiy-jtykhynhh-yk/> , the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics <http://k-12meetingcoordinator.cmail2.com/t/y-l-iidtiiy-jtykhynhh-yu/> ).
The National Alliance for Partnerships in Equity (NAPE) will host its annual Professional Development Institute (PDI) April 21-23, 2015, in Alexandra, VA. This national conference focuses on access, equity, and diversity in education, particularly career and technical education (CTE), and the workforce. Focused on building the capacity, knowledge, and skills of both state education administrators and local educators, the PDI brings together the most current researchers and practitioners in educational equity to share best practices and build a learning community of professionals. A bonus session on Monday, April 20, will feature NAPE’s workshop: Micromessaging to Reach and Teach Every Student. Do you have the perfect STEM instructional materials for girls? Or maybe you’re an outreach professional looking to improve your own practice? Each summer the Center for STEM Education for Girls (http://stemefg.org <http://stemefg.org> ) hosts the STEM Think Tank and Conference. The 4th Annual Think Tank and Conference will be held July 8-10, 2015, at the Harpeth Hall School in Nashville, TN (http://stemefg.org/index.php/think-tank-and-conference/). It brings together national leaders in K12 education for girls and young women (independent, public, charter, and parochial), university K12 outreach coordinators and researchers, STEM university faculty, girls’ informal educators, and members of industry. Please plan to attend if you teach or work with girls and young women in a STEM field. The conference begins midday on Wednesday (July 8) and runs through 5pm on Thursday (July 9). On Friday (July 10) we hold optional post-conference workshops. “Do the Work. Roadmap to STEM Success” has been chosen as the conference theme for 2015. Areas of focus have been selected as listed below. Please note that you do NOT have to choose one of these areas, and that any STEM for girls proposal is welcome. · Partnerships for Change– Partnerships between and among K12, industry, informal, university, counselors, parents, private, public, etc. What are these effective partnerships and how can they be replicated?
· STEM+ – Connections with STEM and all disciplines, including art, foreign language, English/Language Arts, history, computer science etc. in both formal and informal learning
· Transitions – How do we help girls and young women as they transition in life, such as from K12 to university or university to industry/academia?
