Dear ASEE K12 and Precollege Engineering Division Members,

Hello everyone!  I hope you are enjoying some warmer weather like we are down here in Tennessee.

The National Academies have released a new report examining current efforts to connect the STEM disciplines in K-12 education. The report, STEM Integration in K-12 Education, identifies and characterizes existing approaches to integrated STEM education, both in formal and after- and out-of-school settings. It reviews the evidence for the impact of integrated approaches on various student outcomes, and it proposes a set of priority research questions to advance the understanding of integrated STEM education. STEM Integration in K-12 Education proposes a framework to provide a common perspective and vocabulary for researchers, practitioners, and others to identify, discuss, and investigate specific integrated STEM initiatives within the K-12 education system of the United States. And it makes recommendations for designers of integrated STEM experiences, assessment developers, and researchers to design and document effective integrated STEM education. A short, companion animated video explains what STEM is and the potential advantages and challenges of integration.

ASEE has created a Facebook page to help our division members stay in touch via social media at our annual conference. This link will take you to the group page for our division. After joining the group, members can post messages to share division-related events at the conference, facilitate get-togethers in Indianapolis, upload files, and collaborate.   In addition, ASEE encourages us to follow the ASEE Conferences twitter page here: https://twitter.com/ASEEConferences.  They’ll be having contests and other activities around social media during the conference.

Registration for ASEE K12 Workshop is open.  It will be held Saturday, June 14, at the Indianapolis Convention Center.   Take advantage of discounted rates now, and please encourage K12 teachers you know to attend!  More information is below in item 1.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly with information that should be shared with the division or if you have questions or concerns about division work.  It’s easiest to reach me by email at stacy.klein-gardner@vanderbilt.edu.

All the best,
Stacy
