Dear ASEE K12 and Precollege Engineering Division Members,
Hello! I hope this message finds you doing well and not freezing too much in this recent cold snap.
On Friday, November 7, some of your ASEE colleagues were hard at work representing our division at the NSTA Regional Conference in Orlando. We hosted an entire day’s worth of sessions – six of them – that covered all ages K-12 during both informal and formal education time. It was a great day to get the word out that ASEE is THE place to go for K-12 engineering education and to spend some time in professional development with classroom teachers and outreach leaders. Particular thanks go to David Heil, Nancy Ruzycki, and Liesl Hotaling for joining me for the entire day! We’ll host another one of these days at the NSTA Regional in Long Beach in December!
I want to be sure that all members – but especially K12 teachers and administrators as well as outreach providers – of the new resources that ASEE has recently published on their website: http://www.asee.org/conferences-and-events/outreach/egfi-program/k12-teacher-professional-development. Here you will find Standards for the Professional Development of Teachers of Engineering as well as an accompanying matrix for evaluating the areas of emphasis of a particular PD program or even a teacher preparation program. These documents can be used both as formative assessment for PD providers as well as for administrators and teachers to assess their needs and select a PD provider. The site is not quite complete though; soon, a literature survey behind these standards will be posted and the list of authors added. Please share these freely and often in your circles!
The American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) released a new, comprehensive website(navigate.aimbe.org <http://navigate.aimbe.org/> ) designed to inform, inspire, and excite students to pursue careers in bioengineering. I hope you will check out the site’s many features and use it in your classroom or outreach program.
