Dear Colleagues,

We wanted to send you an update about what your ASEE K-12 Division Executive Board has been up to this year.

We have been focusing a lot of our monthly discussions on addressing recommendation four of the National Academy of Engineering report, Engineering in K-12 Education, which reads:

RECOMMENDATION 4. The American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE), through its Division of K–12 and Pre-College Education, should begin a national dialogue on preparing K–12 engineering teachers to address the very different needs and circumstances of elementary and secondary teachers and the pros and cons of establishing a formal credentialing process. Participants in the dialogue should include leaders in K–12 teacher education in mathematics, science, and technology; schools of education and engineering; state departments of education; teacher licensing and certification groups; and STEM program accreditors. ASEE should consult with the National Center for Engineering and Technology Education, which has conducted research on this topic.

The division is working on establishing collaborative efforts with other STEM education related groups and professional organizations. We are planning to engage in more extensive dialogue with these organizations this spring and report the progress at the K-12 Division Business Meeting in June. Let us know if you have any ideas as well!

We have also been working on other efforts, such as

  • Advising the annual K-12 Workshop on Saturday, June 19th in Louisville.

  • Fundraising for the division, especially to support attendance in the annual conference by K-12 teachers
  • Implementing (solicitation, review and selection) the Best Practices in K-12 Engineering Panel competition
  • Updating the Division website (to be unveiled at the Division business meeting in June)

Remember this is your Division! Please let us know what we can do to help you make a greater impact in K-12 engineering education. We are always open to addressing the various needs and concerns of the K-12 Division members, so send us an email if you have something that you would like the Board to tackle or useful information for the larger K-12 Division constituency.

See you in June!

Malinda
