Happy New Year!  I hope you enjoyed time away from work with friends and family.  Now I hope you’re not too cold with this brutal winter weather across much of the country!

Thanks to all of you who submitted your draft paper manuscript for the main ASEE conference.  Our program chair, Sharlene Yang, has received closed to 150 submissions and will soon be assigning reviewers for each paper.  She is hoping that a few more of you will volunteer to participate in the review process.  It’s a great way to learn more about the division’s work and provide a bit of service as well.  If you’re willing to participate, please email Sharlene directly at sharleneyang@yahoo.com.

LAST CALL!  The submissions for the division’s Best Practices in K12 and University Partnerships call are due January 13.  See below for more information on how to submit.  This is a great way to get the word out about your terrific work and allow one of your teachers the opportunity to present on a national stage.

The proposals for our annual K12 Workshop are due January 24.  See below for more information.  Be sure to the division’s work in this important manner!

11th Engineering in K-12 Classrooms – ASEE Annual Teachers Workshop:

This daylong program for teachers and engineering educators from Indiana and across the country will provide an energizing, interactive overview of successful engineering education instruction for the K-12 classroom that – among many other attributes – emphasizes the development of engineering habits of mind (e.g., creativity, teamwork, optimism, systems thinking, persistence). Attendees will: learn engaging hands-on lessons and interactive activities to share with students, receive takeaway materials ready for use in the classroom, and have opportunities to network with other engineering educators.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS:

  • Workshop Proposals may be submitted for review November 8, 2013 – January 24, 2014.
  • To submit a proposal, download the proposal form. Click here.
  • Return the form to the Review Committee at k12workshop@asee.org. Only emailed submissions of this form will be accepted—no faxes please.
  • Individual workshops should prominently:
  • feature hands-on classroom activities
  • provide take-home or classroom-ready materials, in addition to written materials
  • engage participants in interactive exercises
  • explicitly feature strategies, activities and/or curricula that encourage two or more engineering habits of mind

All workshops must be linked to national standards (e.g., the ITEEA Technological Literacy Standards, the Next Generation Science Standards, the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics).In particular, we are seeking proposals addressing elementary/primary grades or demonstrated methods for involving practicing engineers and engineering students in the classroom . Note that presenters must register and pay the registration fee to support their workshop attendance and audio/video costs.

CONFERENCE REGISTRATION:

  •  Early online registration – for attendees and presenters – opens December 6, 2013 and closes May 30, 2104.
  • After May 30, registration must be done onsite at non-discounted rate.

Call for Proposals: Best Practices in K-12 and University Partnerships Panel

The K-12 and Precollege Division of ASEE intends to recognize exemplary K-12 – university partnerships in engineering education at the 2014 ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition in Indianapolis, Indiana. To do this, the division will sponsor a panel session on Best Practices in K-12 and university partnerships. Submissions chosen for participation in this session will demonstrate a true partnership between a K-12 school (or schools) and an engineering or engineering education school/college at a university. The deadline for submission is Monday, January 13, 2014.

Selected partnerships will have data to support proven success in the classroom and will demonstrate engineering engagement and knowledge acquisition by K-12 students through age appropriate activities and lessons. Best Practices Partnership Panel submissions authored collaboratively between engineering and technology education faculty and K-12 teachers are encouraged. Details on the partnership’s structure and goals, the strategies employed to overcome challenges and obstacles, and successes and lessons learned must be included.

One proposal winner will be chosen at each of the following levels: pre-school or elementary school; middle school; high school. The three winning abstracts will be used to create a conference paper for this session. The winning K-12 teachers will each be given a 15-minute time slot to present her/his work to the conference session attendees. The presentations will be followed by a 30-minute panel discussion. In order to offset the costs of attendance, the winning K-12 teachers will have their conference registration and publication fees paid for by the K-12 Division and will receive a travel stipend.
