Hello, K-12 and Precollege colleagues!

Happy February!  I’m not sure how your winter is going, but here in North Carolina I’ve not had to pull our anything heavier than a sweater so far.  I DO know you are busy impacting K-20 stakeholders in engineering education.

There are many announcements in today’s notice, so please take a few minutes to read it all.

The executive board had our monthly call this afternoon and I want to share some opportunities for you to get involved.  Our immediate past chair, Mindy Zarske, will be heading up the Nomination Committee and our elections this spring prior to the annual conference.  If you want to be a part of this effort, please contact Mindy at malinda.zarske@colorado.edu.

Another opportunity is to volunteer for the committee planning the division’s business meeting at the annual conference.  That meeting will be held on Monday, June 11 at 7 am.  If you want to be a part of setting the direction, please contact co-chairs Martha Cyr (mcyr@wpi.edu) or Susan Donohue (susan.donohue@gmail.com).

If you are interested in STEM policy news or announcements, I recommend you check out the Triangle Coalition for STEM Education weekly newsletter (see http://www.trianglecoalition.org/tceb-info/current-issue for the current issue).  I find it to be a quick and concise way to get caught up on the ever changing policy work that impacts what we do.  Currently, I represent ASEE on Triangle’s executive board.

We are really thrilled at the amazing response to the call for proposals for the ASEE K-12 Workshop on Saturday, June 9. Thanks to all of you and especially to K-12 Workshop Guru Libby Martin at ASEE HQ and Stacy Klein Gardner, our chair elect and point person for the workshop, for the great effort attracting a robust and rich variety of proposals.  I look forward to learning a lot again this year.

K-12 and Precollege News/Opportunities

Mark your calendars and submit your abstracts!

We are excited to announce the partnership of the ASEE K-12 and Precollege Division along with The Engineering Place at North Carolina State University and the STEM Education Center at the University of Minnesota to lead the 2012 Colloquium on P-12 STEM Education!

The Colloquium on P-12 STEM Education is an interactive national forum bringing together educators, researchers, STEM professionals, and other STEM stakeholders in a dynamic two-day colloquium. Sessions are hands-on, participatory, and/or experiential. This is an opportunity to learn about the newest research in STEM education, bridge the gap between research and practice to implement effective practices, see and experience what is working in P-12 STEM education classrooms, and discuss next steps and potential solutions for the issues encountered in STEM education.

The ASEE K-12 and Precollege Division and The Engineering Place at North Carolina State University will be providing scholarships and travel grants to K-12 teachers across the United States to attend and present at the Colloquium.  Scholarship information and applications will be available January 15, 2012.  These groups will also help plan the conference with a specific interest in how to make engineering accessible for K-12 students.

Mark your calendar to join us July 9-10. 2012 at the McNamara Alumni Center in lovely Minneapolis, Minnesota!  More information, including registration, is available at:  http://www.cehd.umn.edu/STEM/colloquium2012/default.html .

ASEE News/Opportunities

Abstract Period Open for World Engineering Education Forum (WEEF) 2012

The World Engineering Education Forum (WEEF) will be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina October 15-18, 2012.  The theme for the conference is “Engineering Education for Sustainable Development and Social Inclusion”. Nowadays Development is only viable when it is produced in a sustainable way. Furthermore, and at the same time, it is necessary to solve marginalized sectors needing and resources distribution, promoting social inclusion.  Engineering, particularly its education, has a fundamental role in achieving these goals. It is important to include these issues not only in the Engineering courses syllabus but increasing the number and diversity of students. This forum, which will take place for the first time ever in Argentina and that will bring together the biggest and most important international organizations devoted to Engineering Education, hope to be the place in which these issues will be discussed leading to the definition of policies and strategies that contribute to sustainable development and social inclusion from education.  WEEF 2012 is co-sponsored and co-organized by ASEE.  For more information, please go to http://www.weef2012.edu.ar/paper.php.   The abstract submission period begins February 6 and ends March 2, 2012.

Abstracts being accepted:  ASEE International Forum Interactive Industry Sessions

You are invited to submit an abstract for an interactive industry session at the inaugural ASEE International Forum, to be held in San Antonio, Texas, on June 9-10, 2012, immediately preceding the 2012 ASEE Annual Meeting.   The purpose of the International Forum is to bring together engineering professionals from academia and industry who are engaged in novel engineering education initiatives to report on their initiatives and share information on experiences and best practices related to student development, curriculum and laboratory development, and faculty development.  There is particular interest in highlighting engineering education activities involving at least two nations.

The interactive industry sessions will occur as three (3) parallel 90-minute sessions on the morning of Sunday, June 10, 2012.  ASEE is interested in proposals from industry partners on new developments and best practices in modernizing the undergraduate engineering experience to respond to the emerging needs of industry and society.  Topics of special interest include laboratory tools and devices, learning technologies, and instructional systems that support the development of multi-functional engineering professionals skilled in modern design and analytical techniques, proficient in traditional fields and able to operate as part of multidisciplinary teams, and able to respond to systems-level grand challenges.

These sessions will be industry-led, highly interactive, and applicable to multidisciplinary, international audiences at multiple educational levels.  Discussions during these sessions should serve to stimulate “deep dive” discussions beyond the specific uses of the hardware/software shown to a deeper discussion of how they support a framework for development of students, curricula/laboratories, or faculty.  These sessions should not be company sales pitches.  Ideally multiple firms will collaborate within a single session. Members of the ASEE community and their global partners are invited to submit 1-page abstracts describing the content and design of the session.  Arrangements for power, internet, or audiovisual support for selected presenters are to be made directly with the Forum hotel.

All abstracts should be submitted no later than Friday, March 16 to Page Halle at P.Halle@asee.org
