K-12 and Precollege News/Opportunities
Mark your calendars!
We are excited to announce the partnership of the ASEE K-12 and Precollege Division along with The Engineering Place at North Carolina State University and the STEM Education Center at the University of Minnesota to lead the 2012 Colloquium on P-12 STEM Education!
The Colloquium on P-12 STEM Education is an interactive national forum bringing together educators, researchers, STEM professionals, and other STEM stakeholders in a dynamic two-day colloquium. Sessions are hands-on, participatory, and/or experiential. This is an opportunity to learn about the newest research in STEM education, bridge the gap between research and practice to implement effective practices, see and experience what is working in P-12 STEM education classrooms, and discuss next steps and potential solutions for the issues encountered in STEM education.
The ASEE K-12 and Precollege Division and The Engineering Place at North Carolina State University will be providing scholarships and travel grants to K-12 teachers across the United States to attend and present at the Colloquium. Scholarship information and applications will be available January 15, 2012. These groups will also help plan the conference with a specific interest in how to make engineering accessible for K-12 students.
Mark your calendar to join us July 9-10. 2012 at the McNamara Alumni Center in lovely Minneapolis, Minnesota! More information, including registration, is available at: http://www.cehd.umn.edu/STEM/colloquium2012/default.html .
ASEE News/Opportunities
Call for Proposals: ASEE Annual Workshop on K-12 Education
ASEE’s Ninth Annual Workshop on K-12 Engineering Education – “Employing Engineering for STEM Learning” will be held on Saturday, June 9, in San Antonio, Texas, one day before the opening of the annual conference. Proposals will be accepted through January 27, 2012.
Individual workshops should prominently feature hands-on classroom activities, provide take-home or classroom-ready materials and be designed to engage participants in interactive exercises. Workshops that offer tangible material to attendees, in addition to written material, are specifically solicited. Proposals addressing 1) elementary/primary grades and 2) demonstrated methods for involving practicing engineers and engineering students in the classroom are also sought. Watch the K-12 Workshop website for updates: http://teachers.egfi-k12.org/2012-asee-workshop-on-k-12-engineering-education/.
Abstracts Being Accepted: Frontiers in Education Conference
The 42nd Annual Frontiers in Education Conference (FIE 2012) is the major international conference on educational innovations and research in engineering and computing. FIE 2012 continues a long tradition of disseminating results in these areas. It is an ideal forum for sharing ideas; learning about developments in computer science, engineering and technology education; and interacting with colleagues in these fields.
Whether through a full paper, a work in progress, proposals for panels, special sessions, or workshops, this is an opportunity to share your work with colleagues from around the world. For a list of paper formats and topics of interest, conference information and more, visit
http://fie2012.org/general/call-papers. Abstract Submission Deadline: January 30, 2012.
Abstract Period Opens February 6, 2012 for World Engineering Education Forum (WEEF) 2012
The World Engineering Education Forum (WEEF) will be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina October 15-18, 2012. The theme for the conference is “Engineering Education for Sustainable Development and Social Inclusion”. Nowadays Development is only viable when it is produced in a sustainable way. Furthermore, and at the same time, it is necessary to solve marginalized sectors needing and resources distribution, promoting social inclusion. Engineering, particularly its education, has a fundamental role in achieving these goals. It is important to include these issues not only in the Engineering courses syllabus but increasing the number and diversity of students. This forum, which will take place for the first time ever in Argentina and that will bring together the biggest and most important international organizations devoted to Engineering Education, hope to be the place in which these issues will be discussed leading to the definition of policies and strategies that contribute to sustainable development and social inclusion from education. WEEF 2012 is co-sponsored and co-organized by ASEE. For more information, please go to http://www.weef2012.edu.ar/paper.php. The abstract submission period begins February 6 and ends March 2, 2012.
Additional Opportunities
Paper Submission Opportunity: IEEE Integrated STEM Education Conference
We welcome submissions for the 2nd IEEE Integrated STEM Education Conference (ISEC ’12), which will be held Friday, 9 March 2012 starting at 10 am at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) in Ewing, NJ. This year’s theme is “Integrate by Design.” While all papers on methods of and experience with integrating education (or interdisciplinary education) in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) are welcome, we are very interested in papers on the use of design activities to teach STEM issues and concepts. “Design” is not limited to engineering or technical design activities; for example, experiences of those using art pedagogies to help students learn STEM concepts (or, as it’s being called, STEAM) would be appropriate. We are also interested in hearing from all parties involved in STEM education, including students and parents. Papers discussing STEM education experiences, especially concerning best and worst practices, from those points of view, are encouraged. We would like to have a student, faculty, and parent track at this year’s conference. For full information please go to: http://ewh.ieee.org/conf/stem. Paper Submission Deadline: January 29, 2012.
Abstracts being accepted: STEM Think Tank & Conference
The STEM Think Tank and Conference: “Changing the Paradigm: Lessons Up & Down the Pipeline –K12 to University to Corporate” will be held July 18-20, 2012 at The Harpeth Hall School in Nashville, Tennessee. The STEM Think Tank and Conference will bring together national leaders in K12 education for girls and young women (independent, public, charter, and parochial), university K12 outreach coordinators and researchers, leaders of successful university STEM programs, girls’ informal educators, and members of industry. Please plan to attend if you teach or work with girls and young women in a science, technology, engineering or math field (STEM). Our conference theme will allow us to discuss and learn more from each of these groups, translating lessons learned across the lives of females. Abstracts must not exceed 200 words in length and the deadline for submission is February 17, 2012.
Conference strands have been selected as follows:
- Best Practices in Curriculum & Teaching for Girls
- Girls in Coed Schools
- Getting Started in STEM – What do we mean? How is it different? How do you do it?
- Changing the Conversation – What messages do we send to girls about STEM?
- Community Outreach – How can schools use local museums, universities, science centers, and businesses to give girls hands-on experiences and access to information about STEM careers?
For more information, go to http://www.harpethhall.org/podium/default.aspx?t=160027. If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Stacy Klein-Gardner, Director of the Center for STEM Education for Girls, stem@harpethhall.org.
Proposals being accepted for UNITE program
Proposals are requested for sites to host the UNITE program in Summer 2012. Proposals are due February 24th. A total budget (dependent on availability of funding) of $222,000 will be used to fund 7-12 projects. UNITE is a pre-collegiate summer program for talented high school students from groups historically underrepresented and underserved in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). UNITE is a program of the Army’s Youth Science Cooperative Outreach Agreement (YSCOA), a subset of the Army Educational Outreach Programs (AEOPs). UNITE is coordinated by the Technology Student Association (TSA). For more information, please go to www.usaeop.com or contact Hillary Lee, Program Manager and Primary UNITE contact at hlee@tsaweb.org.
