Three items to share on this Autumnal equinox – all of them are related to the 2017 conference:

  • Abstracts for the 2017 ASEE Annual Conference and Expo in Columbus, OH can be submitted now and are due into Monolith by October 16th. Please go to our division’s Call for Papers for more information.
  • Save the date! The Annual P12 Teacher Workshopwill be held Saturday, June 24, 2017. It’s theme:Inspiring the Next Generation to Take Flight with P12 Engineering Education. (Call for proposals will be posted in November.)
  • PCEE Division Wednesday Workshop: We are looking for people to contribute Exemplary Hands-on Activities to our division workshop. Short proposals (descriptions) are due by October 1st (see details in the announcement section).

Announcements follow my signature, including a final chance (ends tomorrow, September 23rd) to share your thoughts about active learning and STEM with the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

ASEE ANNUAL WORKSHOP at the 2017 Annual Conference: Looking for Contributors … (reposted x1)

Wednesday Workshop Call for Exemplary Hands-On Activities: This year’s PCEE Wednesday Workshop at the ASEE Annual Conference in Columbus on June 28, 2017, will focus on preparing university faculty and staff to plan and implement outreach activities relevant to their discipline and location. In addition to discussing standards and best practices for P12 engineering education we plan to engage attendees in a few exemplary hands-on activities targeting a variety of disciplines. We’d love to have you join us in our four-hour session by sharing an innovative hands-on activity with the workshop attendees! Please send Jenny Keshwani (jmelander7@unl.edu) a brief description of your activity by October 1st if you’d like to be considered for participation in the hands-on component of the PCEE Wednesday Workshop.

OTHER WORKSHOPS (reposted x2)

Two Workshops on Teaching 3D Spatial Skills by Sheryl Sorby. Each workshop will engage participants in the relevant research findings regarding the impact of spatial skills training for improved STEM outcomes as well as hands-on instruction with the curriculum developed by Dr. Sorby.

The cost is $300 per person.  The workshop serves elementary teachers, middle school, and high school teachers as well as university faculty, staff, and graduate students (particularly those who teach introductory courses)

MAKER/3D PRINTING OPPORTUNITY (reposted x1):

Digital Harbor Foundation – 3D Printer and Professional Development: I’m reaching out from the Digital Harbor Foundation, a nonprofit located in Baltimore Maryland. We run a Tech Center and Youth Makerspace and offer professional development opportunities for educators. During the National Week of Making, we launched our Innovation Access Program, through which we will be offering a free 3D Printer and accompanying training to an educator in every state. More details about the Innovation Access Program can be found on our website at dhf.io/iap.

NATIONAL CALL TO ACTION (LAST CHANCE!)

National Call to Action from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy: OSTP is issuing a national Call to Action to improve STEM education through the use of active learning. In issuing a call to action for active STEM learning, the OSTP is seeking commitments to implement active learning strategies in STEM fields, and we are also interested in actions and efforts that will encourage others to do so, including: (1) incentives for PK-12 educators and higher education faculty to implement active learning strategies, (2) investment in professional development opportunities for instructors at every level of education, and (3) training materials and resources for educators to promote the help them use active learning. If you are involved in an effort to drive forward authentic active learning strategies then consider submitting your ideas here by Sept 23, 2016.
