POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCHER WITH PURDUE UNIVERSITY’S INSPIRE RESEARCH INSTITUTE IN K-2 INTEGRATED STEM+ COMPUTATIONAL THINKING (New!) The INSPIRE Reasearch Institute for Pre-College Engineering in the School of Engineering Education at Purdue University is seeking applications for a postdoctoral researcher position. The Postdoctoral Researcher would work with INSPIRE faculty, staff, and students on a project focused on integrating STEM+Computational Thinking+ Literacy for K-2nd grade students in both school and out-of-school settings. Assistant Director of the Learning Assistant Program in Miami, Florida (New!). The STEM Transformation Institute at Florida International University (FIU) is seeking applications for an Assistant Director of the Learning Assistant (LA) Program. The Learning Assistant (LA) Program is a highly innovative program that fosters implementation of evidence-based classroom practices, engages faculty in course transformation, develops undergraduate students to become facilitators of learning in the classroom and studies the impact of transformations.

The Assistant Director (AD) will be involved in all aspects of the LA Program, working closely with the program leaders, undergraduate students, faculty and university administrators. Primary responsibilities include facilitating adoption of the LA model with new faculty and emergent disciplines, including working with faculty and departments to redesign courses to enable best practices in LA-supported courses. Other responsibilities include coordination with other faculty development initiatives and FIU’s administration and possibly management of staff. Opportunities for teaching/advising/research may exist. This is a full time, 12-month position, starting as soon as the position filled. Position requires limited travel, primarily to disseminate outcomes of the program. Required background includes:

  • An earned master or doctorate in science, mathematics, engineering or science/mathematics/engineering education;
  • Minimum 3-years academic experience in teaching and/or in directing academic support experiences;  Very strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Additionally, preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate:
  • Knowledge of recent advances in science, mathematics and/or engineering teaching and learning and/or discipline-based education research (DBER);
  • Experience in supporting course transformation and faculty development;
  • Teaching, advising, and/or administration in higher education;
  • Experience working in collaborative environments.

9th Annual First Year Engineering Experience Conference (re-posted) hosted by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Engineering Fundamentals Department. August 6 – August 8, 2017. Over 200 academic and industry representatives are expected at this meeting to discuss and share relevant topics on the first year engineering experience. Participants include college deans, department chairs, student service professionals, advisors, faculty in engineering and engineering technology, K-12 teachers, and industry leaders from throughout the country.

Proposal submissions will include:

  • workshops (3 pages)
  • full papers (6 pages)
  • work-in-progress papers (3 pages)

IJEMST Special Issue on Engineering Education (re-posted). The International Journal of Education in Mathematics, Science and Technology (IJEMST) is interested in publishing a special issue with a focus on Engineering Education. We are looking for colleagues globally who are interested in contributing articles related to trends, research, and pedagogy in Engineering Education, to be published in the one of the 2018 issues of IJEMST. Qualitative, quantitative, and mixed method research papers, position statements, literature reviews, theoretical works, and works in curriculum and learning environments will be considered. Science Section of Contemporary Issues in Technology and Teacher Education (CITE-Science) (re-posted x3). Our very own Andrea Burrows, PCEE Division member at large, is the new editor for CITE-Science. If you or any graduate students or colleagues have any papers that might fit this journal – including engineering education articles – please consider submitting your work. CITE-Science is sponsored by the Association for Science Teacher Education (ASTE). The unique purpose of this journal is to publish peer-reviewed research reports and theoretical articles on the use of innovative technologies in science teacher education. We encourage manuscripts that deal with the education of preservice or inservice science teachers as well as college level science faculty. This online journal allows authors to include the interactive technologies as part of the manuscript for readers’ direct access to the example technologies. These can include video, audio, animation and external links. In addition, an extended virtual dialogue is possible, as commentaries on published works are encouraged. NEWS FOR TEACHERS:

 

Graduate Program for K12 Teachers (re-posted): The Teacher Engineering Education Program is flexible, affordable, and designed to fit a busy teacher’s lifestyle. All four courses are online, offer 16 total hours of graduate credit, and have a low student-to-instructor ratio. Also, all materials necessary to complete the coursework are shipped to participants, including (but not limited to) robotics projects and hands-on resources from LEGO Education. Course content is differentiated for those just getting started and those who have already used engineering in their classrooms.
