K-12 Workshop on Engineering Education

See you in San Antonio!!

Read on for more information in the latest message from the Division Chair –

Hello, K-12 and Precollege colleagues!

I hope this finds you well.  In a few short days, we will convene our annual conference in San Antonio, TX.  For many of us, the week starts on Saturday, June 9 with the K-12 Workshop.  If you are not pre-registered, you can take care of it onsite beginning at 7:30 am in the convention center.  The program schedule was attached to the email to members, but is linked above.

Sunday offers a host of opportunities to network and learn.  Be sure to check the pre-conference section of the program schedule to catch workshops on assessment in K-12 engineering and a discussion centering on professional development in the field.

ASEE is introducing a new opportunity to network this year: the division mixer!  Come to Ballroom C at the Henry Gonzalez Convention Center from 4:30-6 pm on Sunday, June 10.  The Division Mixer will be a networking opportunity that features each division where attendees will mix and mingle with members of their own divisions and with members of other divisions.   The mixer will feature tables staffed by participating Divisions; Complimentary light refreshments will be provided.

Also attached (to the email, electronic schedule is linked above) is a one page compilation of all 25 K-12 and Precollege sessions, including titles, times and locations.  Note that session one is our DIVISION BUSINESS MEETING!  We will gather in room 217B at the Convention Center starting at 7 am, Monday, June 11.  The agenda for the meeting was determined by you–our members, and includes discussion of division work this year, partnership updates, NextGen standards, our technical program this year and next and work on developing our five year goals for the division.  PLEASE PLAN TO JOIN US for this session—our members are what make us a center of competency in the areas of K-12 engineering and integrated STEM research and practice.  Plus those who come will be among the first to receive the coveted, brand new ASEE K-12 and Precollege division pin :-).

Monday evening from 6-8 pm we will again co-host a reception with our friends and colleagues from the MIND and WIED divisions.  Light refreshments will be served and collaborations will be born!  The reception will be held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Ballroom C.

Look for K-12 and Precollege participants in the conference poster session in the Exhibit hall C on Tuesday from 12:30-2.  These are a great opportunity to see complementary work in other divisions and get a good look at the bigger picture in engineering education.

Our division hosts another unique session on Tuesday evening from 6:15-7:45 PM in 214D at the convention center.  Back by popular demand, members will present activities and curricula in our second Curriculum Exchange. Come try out some new, engaging activities and challenges to take back to your group.

In addition to all of these exciting offerings, our members will present their work in an additional 21 sessions from Monday through Wednesday.  We have nearly 100 papers and presentations this year, reporting on exciting work and research results.

I haven’t missed an annual conference since my first in 1998.  I look forward to it every year, because I come ready to focus on learning as well as teaching and eager to see old friends and colleagues and meet many new ones.  I leave, every year, with many new ideas, friends, collaborators and a lot of ENERGY.  I wish the same for you.

I’ll see many of you in San Antonio and if you can’t make it, my next update at the end of the month will focus on what happened there.

Liz
